A mountain property meant to be lived in
The homeowners loved where they lived—but they knew their outdoor space wasn’t quite keeping up.
They had the setting. The trees. The boulders. The mountain air. What they didn’t have was a space that truly worked for how they wanted to relax and host the people they love.
Much of the existing layout went unused. Privacy was lacking. And while the landscape was undeniably beautiful, it felt more like something to admire from inside than a place to actually spend time. They wanted an outdoor environment that encouraged lingering and made hosting feel effortless.
Just as important, they didn’t want anything that felt imposed or overly designed. The goal was simple—but not easy: create a welcoming space that felt as though the house had always belonged there, settled naturally among the boulders and trees of the mountain.
Shaping a space that feels at home on the mountain
This project was really about working with what was already there, not against it.
We rethought the patio and gathering areas to make them more usable—spaces that naturally draw people in and support both quiet moments and larger get-togethers. New seating zones were carefully positioned to take advantage of views and shade, while screening plantings were layered in to create privacy without cutting the space off from its surroundings.
The steep slope and mature trees demanded a thoughtful approach. Large boulders were placed with intention, echoing the site’s natural geology and helping the landscape feel anchored and authentic.
Handling and placing massive stone on a steep site was one of the project’s biggest challenges—but it’s also what allowed the finished space to feel grounded and right at home.
